Our Story
We are predominately focused on energy asset management programs in Northwest Alberta, with a lengthy track record supporting mature conventional oil and gas facilities and associated annual approvals. Alta Tech appreciates the challenges mature assets are faced with in the industry and leverage our expertise to balance compliance with expenditure.
With offices strategically positioned around mature assets and areas of new development, providing “doorstep” access to regional clients and operations, Alta Tech has been supporting the energy and commercial sector for many years and continues to work on advanced approaches involving in-situ remediation, site closure, and groundwater treatment.
What we do
Providing environmental consulting, engineering, and project management services to private, municipal, commercial, and industrial clients, we are predominantly focused on energy asset management programs in Northwest Alberta, with a significant track record supporting mature conventional oil and gas facilities and their associated annual approvals and regulatory environmental orders.
We place a huge amount of emphasis on building versatile staff within the company which allows Alta Tech to deliver efficiently without a bogged down approach to executing work. Even though we are small, our depth and blend of experience allows Alta Tech to do more with less.
Through research and experience Alta Tech sourced an untouched aquifer, which was triple the supply needs, close in proximity, and benefited our client economically, socially, and environmentally.
Through our knowledge and expertise, we were able to complete effective hydrogeological modelling and site evaluations to more accurately rationalize the site liability, which was reduced to one-sixth of the assessment value from previous years.
Through managing a major sour gas processing company in our region for over 12 years, we have effectively reduced environmental impacts and liabilities by removing onsite sources, assessing offsite migration, and risk mitigation.
How we work
Remediation potential is an issue that clients are faced with on legacy and complex sites and the acquisition cycle in Alberta doesn’t make these challenges any easier. Alta Tech’s expertise provides clients with advanced techniques that, when feasible, steer away from traditional and expensive approaches.
We generate sustainable long-term relationships through our versatile and responsive approach to executing work and collaborate with clients in managing their business. Outside of the energy industry, we also help clients capitalize on our approach in the commercial development of sites considered economically unfeasible.

Troy Nicholl
Principal Engineer | President
Troy is Alta Tech’s Principal Engineer, with over 22 years of facilities engineering and operation in conventional oil and gas and SAGD. Leadership/managerial roles have been at heart of his experience in the last 7 years, with a strong track record in directing the development of qualified and accountable teams to execute a portfolio of projects. A strong operations background along with a solid understanding of the engineering principles, project execution principles, and client development made him a big acquisition for Alta Tech in 2016.
Murray Ostrander, M.A.Sc., P.Eng.
Principal Hydrogeologist / Engineer and Program Manager | Vice President of Technical Services
Murray is Alta Tech’s Principal Hydrogeologist / Engineer, with almost 30 years of hydrogeology and environmental engineering experience. His experience focuses on the conceptualization of hydrological and hydrogeological systems, data interpretation and compilation, and the conceptualization, assessment, and modelling of environmental sites. His project experience includes environmental impact assessments, contaminant site assessments, contaminant remediation design and implementation, development and maintenance of water supply systems, wellhead protection studies, GWIDI studies, groundwater / surface water interaction, and water resource management. Mr. Ostrander has also taught several intermediate and advanced courses on groundwater and contaminant migration.
Lyle Ostrander, P.Eng.
Principal Environmental Engineer and Program Manager | Vice President of Operations
Lyle is a professional engineer with over 25 years of experience, spanning environmental engineering, facility construction, project management, and plant operations. His facility experience in the oil and gas industry includes sour gas plant processing, oil production, mining, and oil sands. A solid track record has been developed in areas that include hazardous waste site characterization, groundwater and soil contamination assessments, source delineation, remedial design, and regulatory compliance. An operations background combined with a strong understanding of environmental engineering principles contributed to a key role that supported the growth of Alta Tech in the Whitecourt region. As one of Alta Tech’s core client leads, Lyle has also managed the design and construction of various in-situ and ex-situ remediation projects totaling $8M.
